Prince Henry the Navigator
  • Born in 1394.
  • He was the son of the Portuguese King John 1.

  • He opened a school for youth/young adults to study the arts of mapmaking, navigation, and shipbuilding.

  • Even though he was called Prince Henry the Navigator by the English, he never actually sailed on any voyages.
  • Died in 1460.


Prince Henry the Navigator was born in Porto Portugal in 1394. He was the son of Portuguese King John I. In his later life he became a soldier in the Portuguese Armed Forces. He later opened a school for youth and young adults to study the arts of Mapmaking, Navigation, and Shipbuilding. At this school he taught his students to create faster and sturdier ships. His life goals were to find a rich spice trade route to the Indies and to explore the west coast of Africa. Prince Henry the Navigator was the first person to sponsor a voyage that made it half way a round Africa. At the bottom of Africa Prince Henry created the Cape of Good Hope. He did this because he wishes people hope to any whom try to sail there due to his experience with the storms he tried to sail through. He sponsored expeditions of discovery in the Atlantic ocean, down the west coast of Africa. He died a great man in 1460.

Christopher Columbus
  • Christopher Columbus was born in 1451.
  • He didn't go to school to much but he learned to read and write Spanish during his travels.
  • He wanted to be a night of the ocean sea.
  • He wanted to find a short way to get to the indies by ship.
  • Spain finally agreed and he got 3 ships the Pinta, Nina, and the Santa Maria.
  • In four months he was ready to sail.
  • After many days the crew wanted to sail back home but Christopher Columbus said 3 more days if we don't see land we will go back.
  • 2 days later they found land.
  • Columbus made a total of 4 trips to the Caribbean and South America while he was alive.
  • Christopher Columbus died in 1506.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. Christopher Columbus did not go to school very much but learned how to read and write during his Spanish travels. Christopher Columbus was believed to be what is called a knight of the ocean sea. This means he was on the ocean close to 24/7. He wanted to find a shorter route to the indies by ship. So he had the idea to reach the Indies by going west to go east. Portugal turned him down so he came to Spain to get approval, Spain approved. In just about 4 months he was ready set out sailing on his voyage. After many days of being out at sea Columbus's crew wanted to turn back , but Columbus firmly said " three more days, if we don't see land then we will turn back. 2 days later they found land in South America. Columbus made four trips to the Caribbean and South America while he was alive. Christopher Columbus died in the year of 1506





Sir Francis Drake
  • Born in 1540.
  • He was the oldest of 11 brothers.
  • He started to work on ships when he turned 18.
  • Got his own fleet when he was 24.
  • He was the first English man to sail around the world.
  • Returned from his trip with the richest cargo any English port had ever seen.
  • Drake was the first man to sail the Pacific, the Indian, and the Atlantic.
  • Drake helped defeat the Spanish Armada.
  • He died in 1596.

Sir Francis Drake was born in 1540 in Devonshire, England.
